Who do you speak to, and what do you speak about?
I’ve had a blast for many years speaking to founders, entrepreneurs, and CEOs—showing them the way because I’ve been a long-time venture capital investor. I co-founded a $400 million fund here in New York City, and that experience showed me how I could leverage all that learning to help people navigate complex fundraising situations. I love it.
What led you to seek out The Speaker Lab when you did?
I’ve really wanted to make speaking my platform. I heard Grant in action and saw how terrific and solid he is, so I signed on. It’s been a great ride—and I’m a tough critic. I don’t say that lightly. I’ve been part of other programs, and The Speaker Lab really stands out. The content, the delivery, the “snackable” videos—they really spoke to me.
Did you have any fears or apprehensions about enrolling?
Not fears—I’m pretty fearless. But my question was, “Can I really make this happen?” There were numerous successful stories about people building substantial speaking platforms, and I hoped to achieve the same success.
What have been some of your aha moments or takeaways from our SPEAK Framework?
I like the way the program steps you through everything in a manageable way—it’s not a series of long, arduous discussions. I’m impressed by the variety of support systems: the accountability calls, the live calls where you can listen to others in that chapter—those are very instructive. And later in the program, having access to the speaker database was another big benefit.
What results or standout moments have you had since implementing what you’re learning?
I feel empowered. I know what to do and how to do it—that’s the secret to success. I’ve had a big speaking life for years, but have not always been paid. Now, I turn down unpaid gigs because I’ve learned, reinforced by Grant and the team, that my time, energy, and creativity are worth something. Just recently, I turned down two speaking engagements I’d done many times before – all pro bono. It was hard, but I feel at peace. I’ve gained confidence in monetizing my value.
What does your new normal look like as a speaker?
The training taught me to use my speaking platform to open doors. For me, that means speaking that leads to advisory or consulting work—that’s perfect, because that’s what I’ve been doing. I believe: If people learn from you, they’ll buy from you. I love teaching and inspiring, and hopefully that opens doors. With my 25-year career as an institutional investor, I’ve seen everything right, silly, and stupid that both entrepreneurs and investors do—and I’ve made many of those mistakes myself. I love sharing those lessons in a fun and instructive way.
Have there been any especially empowering moments for you along the way?
Yes. I did a TEDx talk several years ago on a subject that was really burning inside me. That was empowering. Later, I spoke at a major conference with 4,000 people in the audience. The TEDx prepared me for that bigger stage. I’ve also had a coach for years who has helped me structure my keynotes and make them lively. And now this program has given me the additional insights and finishing touches I needed to know how to proceed. It’s been very strong for me.
Who would you recommend The Speaker Lab to, and what would you say to someone on the fence?
Just the other day, a very experienced speaker asked me about it, and I found myself enthusiastically describing it. For anyone who wants to make a business out of speaking, The Speaker Lab shows you how to do that—without a doubt. It’s not just Grant, it’s all the other pieces that enhance the learning. I’d definitely recommend it.
How did it feel getting your website back?
Such a nice moment! It met my expectations, and I was delighted. Having a professional speaking website adds confidence and gives me the tool to share with others. When people ask, “What can I do for you?” now I can send them a professional link instead of just an email. That’s the icing on the cake.
Anything else you’d like to share?
The quality of the content is excellent, and Grant’s enthusiasm is contagious. My coach Jeremy has been totally supportive, and Lacey has been a great concierge. I haven’t needed the team much, but I know they’re there for me when I do.
Jeanne, it’s been such a pleasure talking to you.
Thank you, Emily. Continued best to you.
