Student Success Stories: Roy Lewis

Here at The Speaker Lab, our goal is to help you get Booked and Paid to Speak. Our Student Success Stories share first hand experiences from our students of how they’ve booked paid speaking gigs and grown their businesses by applying the concepts they learned in our courses.

WHY TSL?

I speak about intentional leadership and working especially with nonprofits and faith-based organizations.

I had been engaged with Grants content for some time. His marketing materials and such. I decided to join after reading through the testimonials of people from different niches, they really spoke to me.

I had a lot in place when it came to speaking. Why I joined TSL was to gain the discipline. Having served in the military for 36-years I know the power of discipline and structure. I knew if I wanted my speaking business to be successful – a viable product I needed the structure to make it marketable. This is why I joined TSL and I have been very pleased with my results.

WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR A-HAs AND TAKEAWAYS?

The biggest takeaway was how the program taught me how to systematize and build a viable product right in module one with my expert positioning statement.

I do have a confession to make. Initially, I had some arrogance, like I am Sergeant Roy, I got this. But, wow, the coaches really opened my eyes to the important things I did not know. It’s so important to be coachable. You have to let the coaches do their job and leave everything you think you know at the door.

That one exercise of defining my expert positioning statement really opened my eyes to the structure of building a solid foundation in my business. Today, I know it by heart. Someone asks me what I do, and BOOM, I spit it out confidently and proudly.

You see, that statement  really does become the foundational aspect of your business. It drives the things that you do, the decisions you make, and how you present yourself as a speaking brand.

The other a-ha was listening to Grant in module 2 – Prepare your talk. He was talking about the importance of weaving in and out of a personal story, a main point, transitions, etc. It has really helped me in creating talks that keep the attention of my audience and of course, make an impact. Again, my goal was to gain discipline in my speaking business and this alone has helped me create structure, organization, and impact with my talks powerful stuff! .

WHAT IS YOUR NEW NORMAL?

2 gigs in one day is a new normal! I was hesitant to say yes, but they I just went for it and it went great.

I finally have the education from TSL and I have the time to do this. I also have the confidence to navigate all aspects of my speaking business, so when it comes to booking gigs and getting on stage there is no need to freak out or second guess myself.

The Speaker Lab gives you everything you need down to the emails to send, what to say on the call with an event planner, contracts and more. And if there is ever a moment I am unsure what I should do, I have The Speaker Lab community, which has been such a huge bonus to me.

The other new normal is today, I am a professional speaker and it feels really good to own that.

WHO WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO THE SPEAKER LAB?

I would recommend The Speaker Lab to people who have something to say, they have a passion about that specific topic, and they believe in its value.

I think everybody has that unique – something that they can bring to the table; a story, experience, or expertise  and if they are willing to step out of the box and share that piece of themselves I believe the right people are willing to listen and will gravitate to their message.

Having a message that you believe in is very important. If you bring this to TSL they will help you package it into a marketable product. It will take work and time, but if this is something you see yourself doing – being a professional speaker – The Speaker Lab will most definitely help you achieve that.
